Can I be the first to say that if Patrick is promoting seal oil consumption it's probably bad news for seals?

A Prize for the first person who comes up with a photo of a Nutritionist clubbing a baby seal to get at it's "life-giving oil". Just think what we could do with an image like that...

Sandy of Junk Food Science is outstanding and sadly all too accurate on this issue. [Shinga]

The horrible thought occurs that a certain person, trained in psychology, is all too aware of this and so keeps churning the stuff out. But you know my opinion is that rebutting such exaggerated claims and making reliable, accurate information available the public domain is of great value in itself. People might slowly catch on and, at the very least, those who make unsubstantiated claims can't plead ignorance of the real facts.

Well sleuthed, James C. The quotation was enough to let me find 2 references in the Amazon Look Inside facility for New Optimum Nutrition for the Mind, April 2007 edition.

Ref 1, part 1, pg 42:

Another negative factor is alcohol. It not only blocks the conversion of fats into DHA, but dissolves fatty acids within the brain's membranes and replaces DHA with a poor substitute docosapentaenoic acid (DPA). This may be one of the main reasons why alcohol consumption is associated with mental impairment.

Ref 2, part 2, pg 82:

Alcohol worsens your memory by dissolving fatty acids within brain cells and replacing the beneficial brain-building omega-3 DHA with a poor substitute, docosapentaenoic acid or DPA.

One has to assume that he is discussing the Omega 6 rather than Omega 3 form of DPA but the reader could use some situational guidance. Oddly enough, the newsletter contained no such caveats among the paens of praise and the dubbing of DPA as one of the new musketeers of the fatty acids.

I must pop this into another post or this one and give you the hat-tip.

I think there was a better quote than this somewhere else, but the Optimum Nutrition for the Mind book does state that: "Alcohol worsens your memory by dissolving fatty acids within brain cells and replacing DHA with a poor substitute, DPA" (P. 58 Optimum Nutrition for the Mind, headed "Alcohol Pickles Your Brain"). No reference was cited to support this statement, so not sure which study/studies this information came from. Is DPA a poor substitute for DHA within brain cells? By the way, I'm just wondering (as I haven't seen the newsletter myself), did Mr Holford issue a caveat to this effect when extolling the virtues of DPA?

Grief, James. If you can track down that reference, I would be grateful.

The trouble with relying so much on animal cell lines and in vitro studies is that it really doesn't always scale into similar activity on human cells or in the overall human organism.

Even when the research is justifiably optimistic about something, there is no reason to believe that the formulation of untested supplements would have comparable effects: ConsumerLabs in the US frequently reports that supplements do not label their contents accurately.

I could swear that at some point in the not-too-dim-and-distant past Patrick has referred to other aspects of DPA. Possibly in the 'Optimum Nutrition for the Mind' book. If I can track it down I'll let you know. I seem to recall an implication that DPA was inferior to DHA when incorporated into phospholipids / cell membranes, but I could be wrong.

Thanks, Stever. This stuff is a slog to do particularly when you know in advance that Holford's inappropriate use of research to promote DPA supplementation etc. is not the most fascinating topic in the world.
