Patrick Holford Trails His July Wisdom on Cochrane, Vaccinations and Other Topics

June 29, 2008 · 2 Comments

Former Visiting Professor Patrick Holford but still Head of Science and Education at Biocare is keen on promoting the value of his 100%health subscription service. He spoke about his service in glowing terms at the recent Allergy and Gluten Free Show 2008[1] and recently sent around an email that trails a lot of interesting topics for his upcoming mail out to his 100%health subscribers: amonst the topics are where the Cochrane reviewers went wrong and a promise of an updated Holford review of the evidence behind vaccination guidelines. ‘Dr’ Holford on the immune system in the Galway Advertiser

June 27, 2008 · 4 Comments

Here at HolfordWatch, we were interested to see the Galway Advertiser referring the ‘Dr Patrick Holford’: Holford is not a doctor.  The paper has been contacted about this - and we are sure that Holford himself will be keen to see this error corrected. However, there are also a number of other significant problems with the article: two many to analyse in one post, but we will look at a couple here.

Firstly, Holford claims that the immune system

fights off viruses, bacteria and other organisms which try to attack you and cause illness, from the common ones that cause cold…to the more rare but often deadly ones like…AIDS.

AIDS is not a virus, bacteria or organism: it can be defined as “a set of symptoms and infections resulting from the damage to the human immune system caused by the human immunodeficiency virus”. AIDS is also - with apologies for stating the obvious - a serious condition. People who have developed AIDS, or are concerned about HIV/AIDS, should discuss this with a qualified doctor rather than taking the advice of a self-described nutritionist. (more…)

Visiting Professor Patrick Holford, Not Even for a Thousand Days

June 25, 2008 · 25 Comments

Patrick Holford on ITV Lunchtime 16 April 2008
So, it’s farewell to the Visiting Professorship (please click that link to demonstrate the fabulousness that is JKN) for Former Visiting Professor Patrick Holford but still Head of Science and Education at Biocare.

Holford and Teesside had a relationship that saw him enjoying the fruits of his professorship for far short of a 1000 days. But it was probably enough for both parties to have had a lasting impact on each other and to have parted with mutual regret.

No flowers by request. Champagne donations probably gratefully received by the noted scholars and researchers who were being linked to him by association. (more…)

Patrick Holford Refers to Himself As An Expert (No-One Else Was Volunteering)

June 22, 2008 · 14 Comments

Former Visiting Professor Patrick Holford and Head of Science and Education at Biocare has been interviewed in South Africa as part of his promotional work for Optimum Nutrition Made Easy. Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4. Regular readers are accustomed to Holford’s alternate reality (and part 2) so will not be surprised that he refers to himself as an expert in diabetes.

We’re tempted to say that he has recourse to this because few knowledgeable people, credulous journalists don’t count, are prepared to describe him as an expert in a named field. (more…)

Dore’s assets (but not its debts) are bought by Wynford Dore

June 20, 2008 · 10 Comments

We have just heard that the assets of both DDAT UK and Camden Holdings limited (both of which traded as Dore) have been bought by Wynford Dore.  As the Sun reports, Dore

Founder, the paint millionaire Wynford Dore today bought the assets of the company.

But he has taken NO responsibility for its debts.

That means staff owed thousands of pounds in wages and parents who paid more than £2,000 for the controversial course are likely to be left out of pocket.

Administrators have confirmed that neither Dore, nor rugby ace Kenny Logan — who was a director of the company — is legally obliged to repay creditors. (more…)

Patrick Holford and How to Obtain 6000 ORAC Units a Day

June 20, 2008 · 4 Comments

Patrick Holford on ITV Lunchtime 16 April 2008
Former Visiting Professor Patrick Holford and Head of Science and Education at Biocare advised his audience on how to increase their consumption of ORAC units[1] in a recent talk at the Allergy and Gluten Free Show 2008. Holford was shilling for his 100%health newsletter and describing the research that he and his team do for it and emphasising the importance of a scientific approach.[2] For a brief, heady moment, it seemed as if Holford were about to advise the audience to take regular doses of Respectful Insolence but it soon transpired that he had oxygen radical absorbance capacity (pdf) in mind. Anti-oxidants and Supplementation: Not As Straightforward As It Is Made Out To Be

June 11, 2008 · 3 Comments

Former Visiting Professor Patrick Holford is Head of Science and Education at Biocare and both he and several other media nutritionists have a relationship with anti-oxidant supplements that mirrors the behaviour of Margaret Thatcher and her Cabinet. She slapped them around (metaphorically), she promised them some huge benefits but didn’t deliver them, she occasionally humiliated them and, through it all, she inspired devotion right up until the coup that followed a groundswell of grumblings that no matter what Those Up Top thought, things were not working so well for Everybody Else. Grand Rounds 4:38 Is Up

June 10, 2008 · No Comments

Dr Crippen of NHS Blog Doc is the host of this week’s Grand Rounds. There is a good, eclectic set of posts and a good sprinkling of ones from the UK.

HolfordWatch was intrigued by some sleight-of-accountancy that has been revealed about the funding of a controversial CT scanning for lung cancer study and the sponsors behind an awareness campaign for CT screening for lung cancer. Dr Nick Genes has the story: Early detection of an invasive mass-marketing campaign and Metastasis. (more…)
