Patrick Holford: Why Did BBC Oxford Radio Give Him Free Advertising?

BBC Radio Oxford broadcast an infomercial for Patrick Holford’s books and his commercial diet programme. They did not invite any experts to discuss his diet or claims, question whether the ‘free diet trial’ involved purchasing supplements or blood tests, nor ask for detail of the ‘science’ that he claims supports his advice. Continue reading

What Prevents People From Eating a Healthier Diet?

Media nutritionists such as Gillian McKeith and Patrick Holford advocate a diet which is unaffordable for many of those whom they claim would benefit from their nutritional wisdom. There are many stark socio-economic reasons why some people can not eat well. HolfordWatch will examine the practicalities and affordability of eating a balanced diet on a budget. Continue reading

Resistant Starch: Misunderstood and Mis-promoted

Men’s Health advises its readers to eat vegetables with resistant starch because it is a good dieting aid. Unfortunately, the recipe that they give neglects to mention the important fact that, for potatoes, it is essential that the vegetable should be cooled in order for the resistant starch to form as heating destroys the crystals. Simple dietary messages are easily garbled in the media but journalists and readers blame scientists for any resulting confusion. Continue reading

Patrick Holford, GL Diet and Satiety Plus the Misrepresentation of Some Research: Same Old, Same Old

Patrick Holford claims that recent research proposes a mechanism that explains the alleged appetite-curbing effects of a low glycaemic load diet. In a disturbing pattern, he seems to overlook that the paper in question evaluates the impact of a single meal and the researchers report on glycaemic index rather than load. All this and many other issues are overlooked in the promotion of books, seminars and diet clubs and supplements to support Holford’s Low GL Diet. Continue reading

The Holford Low GL Diet trial: how was it conducted, and what were the results?

Patrick Holford and His Alternative to Anti-Depressants

Professor Patrick Holford frequently accuses healthcare workers, scientists and researchers of concealing research or failing to report it accurately. Holford seems to have failed to noticed some relevant nuances about the Kirsch et al meta-analysis of anti-depressants and is promoting his unproven nutritional advice as an appropriate alternative with ‘conclusive evidence’ for some elements. Holford overstates the evidence for tryptophan and 5-HTP. Continue reading

Patrick Holford v. Dr. Sarah Jarvis in the Arena of Diabetes Management Part 2

A colleague who watched the LK Today segment informs me that Dr. Sarah Jarvis “thoroughly pwned” Patrick Holford. A nephew with a fondness for WWWF expressed the opinion that it was “a total smackdown”. It was livelier than the usual … Continue reading
