I was interested to see Holford blogging about Pocobelli et al’s recent article on “Use of supplements of multivitamins, vitamin C, and vitamin E in relation to mortality”. Holford reports the study as finding that “Multivitamin use cuts heart disease … Continue reading

Patrick Holford and How to Obtain 6000 ORAC Units a Day
Former Visiting Professor Patrick Holford and his crack team of researchers have uncovered that there are long-lived people who eat a diet that is plentiful in anti-oxidants. He has decided to interpret this as their ORAC intake and advises us how we might obtain 6000 ORACs a day from a diet. However, there is a danger that charities are being used as proxies to endorse products and provide nutritional or health benefit claims that the manufacturers are restricted from making by various pieces of regulation or legislation. We consider the recent endorsement of CherryActive dried cherries by Patrick Holford and the Food for the Brain Foundation: this product does not seem to match the stated criteria for endorsement. Irish Association of Nutritional Therapy: Giving the Facts About the Cochrane Review of Antioxidant Supplements
The Irish Association of Nutritional Therapy (IANT) has posted a response to the Cochrane Review of Antioxidant supplements for prevention of mortality in healthy participants and patients with various diseases. IANT claims that the review is “best completely flawed and at its worst seriously damaging and misleading”. However, from our reading, IANT distorts the review, mis-reports some of the study criteria and attributes some statements to the authors that do not appear in the review. Continue reading

Prof Patrick Holford makes a basic error about antioxidant side effects
Professor Patrick Holford claims that “there are no known or reported short-term side effects of antioxidants”. We have helpfully linked to some of these side-effects. In other news, one has to wonder just what Professor Holford is teaching at the University of Teesside. Continue reading
