Does Patrick Holford Lack Generosity of Spirit As Well As Scholarly Accuracy?
Former Visiting Professor Patrick Holford of Teesside University has a subscription 100%health service. Subscribers pay for information that will transform their life and health. In the November 2008 issue, Holford casts aspersions on the the state of knowledge of the research literature on chromium and blood sugar management for the writers and editors of the Manual of Dietetic Practice. He upbraids them for failing to update their text in the light of a systematic review that was published *after* the book was published. Despite Holford’s selective quotation from that review, it is clear that the review does not merit any update to the text as yet. Continue reading

Dr Ben Goldacre was on BBC 1′s One Show: watch it on BBC iPlayer. Goldacre discusses the media’s responsibility for poor science reporting. There are several good illustrations and an entertaining contribution from Professor Tom Sanders who explains that he thinks of self-declared nutritionists as “spoon-benders” who make it up as they go along. Sanders’ pith and deadpan delivery is a good counterpoint to Goldacre’s high-involvement presentation style. Continue reading
