Patrick Holford: Why Did BBC Oxford Radio Give Him Free Advertising?
BBC Radio Oxford broadcast an infomercial for Patrick Holford’s books and his commercial diet programme. They did not invite any experts to discuss his diet or claims, question whether the ‘free diet trial’ involved purchasing supplements or blood tests, nor ask for detail of the ‘science’ that he claims supports his advice. Continue reading

Holford: “Research has shown that women in particular tend to put on 7 pounds a year”
In the holiday season, people often worry about weight gain. I’m not sure that things quite add up with Holford’s blog’s contribution to the discussion, though. A contributor has blogged that Research has shown that women in particular tend to … Continue reading

Joanna Blythman: Please Read the Data Appendices About Organic Food Before Conjuring ‘Cancerous Conspiracies’: Part 1
Joanna Blythman and the Soil Association accuse the Food Standards Agency of ignoring the statistics in its own review for differences in nutrient levels between organic and conventionally produced food. We suggest, respectfully, that Blythman and the Soil Association are wrong and refer them to the original data. Continue reading

Patrick Holford, Shark Liver Oil and Walnuts
Holford over-extrapolates the evidence from a systematic review and meta-analysis to support his own, inconsistently-expressed views on nuts and seeds; neglects to mention appropriate caveats; is currently premature in promoting squalene as a “cancer preventive”; makes inappropriate comparisons of the ORAC values of substances that have very different water percentages (let’s overlook the issue of the relevance of ORACs for now); and perpetuates the familiar, embarrassing nutritionism assertion concerning the awesome nutrient power of nuts and seeds. FSA’s Low Income Diet and Nutrition Survey: Some Snippets
The Eating within recommended dietary guidelines and on a budget project is having some difficulties. Not, oddly, on the actual shopping, cooking or budgeting fronts but the dietary analysis that I want to perform. On the upside, I have located … Continue reading

Resistant Starch: Misunderstood and Mis-promoted
Men’s Health advises its readers to eat vegetables with resistant starch because it is a good dieting aid. Unfortunately, the recipe that they give neglects to mention the important fact that, for potatoes, it is essential that the vegetable should be cooled in order for the resistant starch to form as heating destroys the crystals. Simple dietary messages are easily garbled in the media but journalists and readers blame scientists for any resulting confusion. Continue reading

Daily Express, Better You, The Leadership Factor and Laura Clout: the Yes Minister approach to market research
The Sunday Express recently claimed that research shows that more than 8 in 10 of use do not eat fruit and vegetables in our daily diet – this number was derived from a survey. Sadly, it does not seem as if the survey questions were well designed and this casts doubt on the value of the findings. Continue reading

Sue Arnold Praises Patrick Holford’s How to Quit, in the Guardian
Sue Arnold has published a disappointingly credulous review of Patrick Holford and David Miller’s How to Quit without Feeling S**t in the Guardian. The Guardian. And it’s not April 1. Continue reading
Seriously, What Do They Teach at the Institute for Optimum Nutrition Judging by the IONistas in the Public Eye?
Dr Ben Goldacre pwnd detox and Detox in a Box on the BBC Today programme. Oddly enough, Detox in a Box has nutritional expertise that is supplied by Diane Green, a diplomate nutritionist from the Institute of Optimum Nutrition. The sample menus are full of unevidenced assertions and the sort of nonsense that passes for wisdom in nutritionism. One wonders precisely what is taught at the ION. Continue reading
