Who Wrote About Food for the Brain in The Economist: Conflict of Interest?

It is with great sorrow and yet some amusement that we report the identity of the writer responsible for the recent, lamentable, credulous write-up about the Food for the Brain conference in The Economist. The article lauded nutritional approaches to the treatment of addiction. When you learn the identity of the author, you may think that there is a conflict of interest, we couldn’t possibly comment. Patrick Holford and His Alternative to Anti-Depressants

Professor Patrick Holford frequently accuses healthcare workers, scientists and researchers of concealing research or failing to report it accurately. Holford seems to have failed to noticed some relevant nuances about the Kirsch et al meta-analysis of anti-depressants and is promoting his unproven nutritional advice as an appropriate alternative with ‘conclusive evidence’ for some elements. Holford overstates the evidence for tryptophan and 5-HTP. Continue reading

Statins and Why Patrick Holford Is Breaking My Heart: Part 1

I don’t expect much of Patrick Holford. I thought that he was good for a little light relief, the occasional surge in blood pressure, a claim here, a statement there, that provokes a roll of the eyes and a shrug … Continue reading
