Patrick Holford, YorkTest and a Migraine Study
Former Visiting Professor Patrick Holford but still Head of Science and Education at Biocare has an enthusiasm for interventions that we wish we might share but, too frequently, when we examine the studies on which he relies, the results do … Continue reading

Allergy UK Wants YorkTest IgG Food Intolerance Tests Available on NHS
YorkTest has yet more credulous write-ups in local media. Allergy UK appears to be supporting their call for the provision of IgG food intolerance tests on the NHS although clinical allergists and immunologists state that the test has no role in the diagnosis of food intolerance. Continue reading

Patrick Holford, Still Claiming IgG Levels Are Relevant to Food Intolerance and Weight Loss
Patrick Holford claims that food intolerance is linked to resistant weight loss. He continues to advise people to purchase YorkTest’s IgG blood test to diagnose food intolerance although many associations of immunologists and clinical allergists have reported that the test has no clinical support or relevance. He also advises that people should take the supplements that he recommends that are made by the company for which he works. Continue reading

Ian Marber, The Food Doctor, The Mail and The Curate’s Egg
Ian Marber, The Food Doctor, recently outlined his plan to defeat abdominal bloating and gas. He correctly gave his opinion that there is little to support the notion that IgG tests are helpful for food intolerance diagnosis but then followed it up with what looks like an anti-candida diet that lacks clinical evidence. Continue reading

When Constipation Becomes a National Pastime or Why Japan Is An Awful Warning to Us All
Troubled by the incidence of constipation amongst young children, there is a campaign in schools in Japan to teach children how to have healthy bowel movements and eliminate constipation. Japan seems to have a remarkable obsession with bathroom gadgetry that co-exists with social reticence about using the bathroom in earshot of others. In the UK, we have our own bowel obsessions. Continue reading

Update on Which?, YorkTest and Selective Quoting in Google Sponsored Links
As an interesting update to our recent discussion of the Which? investigation into food intolerance tests, YorkTest seems to have withdrawn its Google sponsored ads that had so egregiously quote-mined and distorted the results of the investigation. However, this incident speaks volumes about the state of transparency in the relationship between YorkTest and the customers that it has and the customers that they are attempting to attract. Continue reading

YorkTest, Hardman & Hart: there’s a difference between the BMJ and Nutrition and Food Science
A YorkTest brochure about their IgG food intolerance tests states that there are “25 years of the highest quality ‘double blind’ clinical trials that have been published in numerous peer reviewed medical journals, including the British Medical Journal”. No, there aren’t and they have never published in the BMJ. Chutzpah or mistake? Continue reading

Holford’s Health Products for Life breaches ASA rules on truthfulness and substantiation
Today, the ASA have ruled against Health Products for Life (HPFL): a supplement company that Professor Patrick Holford (Head of Science and Education at Biocare) sold to Biocare, and which has a website – and sells pills – with a … Continue reading

Food for the Brain Child Survey: The Promotion
Professor Patrick Holford and Drew Fobbester co-authored the Food for the Brain Child Report 2007. The report was covered widely and largely uncritically in the media. It was presented as a snapshot of the dietary status and mental health of children although it is not a representative sample of UK children and that there are severe limitations to what may be claimed for the study. Holford Watch is willing to make a contribution to the critical appraisal of this report; especially when some authorities express the pious hope that it should be read by people who might influence public policy. Continue reading

Patrick Holford Still Advocates IgG Testing for Food Allergies
Professor Patrick Holford of Teesside University and Head of Science and Education at Biocare frequently upbraids professionals and researchers for what he perceives as their lack of up-to-date research. Holford’s 100%health newsletter for November 2007 is full of the usual … Continue reading
